This is the first book dummy of Chris Killip’s seminal work In Flagrante, consisting of large format black and white photographs taken in the North East of England between 1973 to 1985. Made during a period of de-industrialisation in Britain, the work charts a changing landscape and the effect this had on those living within the surrounding communities.

Killip made two dummies with editor Mark Holborn before working with a publisher. Featured here is book dummy one, which details the early experiments with page layout, sequencing, and overall pacing of the book. They are converted sketchbooks illustrated with silver gelatin prints, which have been hand-pasted in by the photographer.

The book was eventually published by Secker & Warburg in 1988 to great acclaim, and in 2017 an expanded version In Flagrante Two was published by Steidl.
