Return to Manchester (SIGNED) By Martin Parr

Martin Parr Return to Manchester was published to coincide with the exhibition of the same name at Manchester Art Gallery, 2018.

Martin Parr studied at Manchester Polytechnic (now Manchester Metropolitan University) from 1970-73; he shot some of his earliest social documentary work while a student there, including Prestwich Mental Hospital, 1972. He has continued to visit Manchester over the past four decades, including to document the city for the Guardian Cities Project in 2008, and produced work which has featured in many iconic Parr series including Bad Weather and Spending Time.

As a part of the exhibition, Manchester Art Gallery commissioned Martin Parr to create a 2018 portrait of the city. Parr returned several times throughout the year and produced a new body of work, which when juxtaposed with previous Parr photography taken in and around Manchester, highlights change and continuity in both the city and humanity.
