10.00 / Vinca Petersen in conversation with Aaron Schuman
Vinca Petersen will be joined by Aaron Schuman for a conversation on several of Vinca’s groundbreaking photographic projects, made whilst living a life of raving and roaming throughout the 1990s. This will include her move to London and discovery of its rave scene at the age of 17 (Future Fantasy), her 10-year journey around Europe putting on free parties and festivals with the Techno Traveller community (No System), and a photo-road-trip that she took through Texas in 1999 with four women, including her close friend and fellow photographer Corinne Day (Deuce and a Quarter). Vinca will share her memories and experiences of making this work, as well as reflect on what it means to revisit these photographs and this time thirty years later.
11.00 / Stephen Gill
Before, during and as a point of departure.
Stephen Gill will present images from many of his projects, from those that pre date the 90’s, to work he made throughout the decade, along with different works that followed that could be seen as a part reaction or response to the rapidly changing period of the 90’s itself. This includes what was happening in photography and restrictions imposed by the medium itself.
12.10 / Juergen Teller
Renowned photographer Juergen Teller will give a talk on his creative practice. Full details to be announced shortly.
lunch
2.30 / Joy Gregory
Joy Gregory will be in conversation with researcher Roshi Naidoo, who is renowned for her work with museums around cultural politics and identity. They will explore Joy's creative practice in the context of relevant events and publications of the period. The discussion will touch upon Joy's recent publication Shining Lights, the first anthology to bring together the groundbreaking work of Black women photographers active in the UK during the 1980s and 1990s.
coffee and cake
04.00 / Richard Billingham
Richard will talk about his creative practice in the 1990s including the photographic series 'Ray's a Laugh' and 'Fishtank', a film made for BBC2.
The book 'Ray's a Laugh' was first published in 1996 and became one of the most significant photobooks of the decade; a new edition of this work has now been published by MACK. Richard will discuss and share many images from Ray's a Laugh as well as touch on why now is a poignant time to republish the book.
04.50 / Signings
This event follows our previous seminar days exploring photography in the 70s, 80s and Another Country, showcasing an overview of British Documentary Photography since 1945.
