Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller will join Martin Parr for a special screening of Jeremy’s film The Battle of Orgreave (An Injury to One is an Injury to All).

This event has been programmed to coincide with the 2024 MPF exhibition ‘One Year! Photographs from the miners’ strike 1984/85′. Marking the 40th anniversary of the miners’ strike, this show examines the vital role photographs played during the strike, including many materials drawn from the Martin Parr Foundation collection.

The Battle of Orgreave film is a 62 minute video piece made in 2001, for which Jeremy produced a reenactment of the clash between police and miners that unfolded at Orgreave in 1984. For Jeremy, the specific historical event stands as a symbol of the destruction of mining communities, as well as the wider social fabric of the working class during the Thatcher government.

Following the screening Jeremy will be joined by Martin Parr for a conversation about the film and the role of photography during the miners’ strike. The conversation will then be opened to the floor.

This event will be hosted in The RPS auditorium, next door to the Foundation.

‘In 1998 I saw an advert for an open commission for Artangel. For years I had had this idea to re-enact this confrontation that I had witnessed as a young person on TV, of striking miners being chased up a hill and pursued through a village. It has since become an iconic image of the 1984 strike – having the quality of a war scene rather than a labour dispute. I received the commission, which I couldn’t believe, because I actually didn’t think it was possible to do this. After two years’ research, the re-enactment finally happened, with about eight-hundred historical re-enactors and two-hundred former miners who had been part of the original conflict.’ – Jeremy Deller
