Daniel Meadows will give an MPF talk about his new publication, Book of the Road (Bluecoat Press, 2023) which celebrates the 50th anniversary of his Free Photographic Omnibus.
In 1973, aged twenty-one and fresh out of art school, Daniel repurposed a 1948 double decker bus as his home, gallery and darkroom. For fourteen months he criss-crossed England making portraits of all-comers, giving the pictures away. He covered 10,000 miles and photographed 958 people. He also did photo reportage and made audio recordings.
The evening will be in two parts. First Daniel will give an overview of the work, now regarded as a landmark project of twentieth century British documentary practice, before being joined by the book’s editor and designer Tom Booth Woodger for a conversation followed by questions from the floor and a book signing.
