Photographic artist Justine Kurland will deliver a one day workshop of photography and collage, exploring her initiative - The Society for Cutting Up Men’s Books. This workshop follows her recent photobook - SCUMB MANIFESTO, published by MACK books, 2022.

Inspired by Valerie Solanas’ iconoclastic feminist tract SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) Manifesto, SCUMB Manifesto presents Justine Kurland’s own initiative - the Society for Cutting Up Men’s Books.

'Collage has long been a feminist strategy in art as in life: hybrid, shape-shifting, multiform, rebellious, irreverent and very funny. The cut is violent but the pasting can be seen as a metaphor for mending, bringing the margins to the center, a revision rife with possibility.' - Justine Kurland

Join justine for a day dissecting the pages from existing photobooks to make your own original artwork.

In the morning Justine will invite a group discussion on the books participants have brought to cut and the ways collage might revitalise the materials. Following this, using scalpel and glue, participants will create their own unique collage with hands on assistance and group feed back.

'For the last several years, I've culled my library of canonized white male photographers, men who have taken up to much room psychically and literally, whose work crowd our book shelves, museums, and academies. This workshop is a call to action, inviting others to purge themselves of their man books. Together we will cut and paste as a collective way of dealing with historical inheritance and tradition; not all of which is a gift.' - Justine Kurland

This workshop will be available on two dates and participants can book onto either 14 NOV or 15 NOV.

Justine will also be delivering an artist talk in the MPF gallery on the evening of 14 NOV and workshop participants are welcome to join this free of charge.
