Photographer, writer and broadcaster Johny Pitts will give an MPF artist talk around his new photobook, Afropean: A Journal, published by Mörel, 2024.
Having undertaken a 6 month journey around Europe for his work of nonfiction Afropean: Notes from Black Europe, in this new publication Johny brings together photographs, notes and ephemera from a wider 20 year period, providing an alternative map of the continent, in search of answers about his own mixed-race identity, and a portrait of Europe’s multi-ethnic reality.
In this work Johny takes the viewer to places such as Cova Da Moura, the Cape Verdean shantytown on the outskirts of Lisbon with its own underground economy, and Rinkeby, the area of Stockholm that is eighty percent Muslim, all the while presenting Afropeans as lead actors in their own story.
In his new publication, Johny blends photography with personal ephemera, such as tickets, diary notes, maps, postcards and much more collected over his journey. This photobook follows Johny's first publication Afropean: Notes From Black Europe, published by Penguin, 2020.
The talk will be followed by questions from the floor and a book signing, where copies of Afropean: A Journal will be available from MPF bookshop.
