For photographer Barney Curran, the decision to create this book stems from the idea that often, these days, images are consumed fleet-ingly. Working carefully with StudioSmall and writer Leanne Cloudsdale, he has devised a way of presenting his pictures in a way that gives us time to follow the journey at a slower pace - we see practice, procession and then a pint at the end. Digitally, the viewer may have scrolled at a different tempo. In print form, we take our time and absorb.
Asked what part of the project he feels most proud of, Barney explained, "The army plays a ceremonial and symbolic role in British society and I feel fortunate to have been given access to document this during such a large event in our collective history. We are definitely led to believe the 'ceremony' is faultless and faceless, but this book shows that there is a more person-able, human element to the army that is often hard to see."
Guy Marshall from StudioSmall described how, as a child, "I used to draw stormtroopers and guardsmen - I guess it's how I might have stumbled into graphic design. As a complete pacifist with few royal tendencies I've always (somehow) loved the bold aesthetic of military uniforms with its scarlet jackets and busby hats. With this book we see the soldiers as very real people, just like you and me. Barney's photographs show us human moments behind the edifice of parades and patriotism."
