Tariq Zaidi will discuss new work exploring self-expression through fashion, style and art on the streets of Kinshasa and Brazzaville, Congo. This has recently been published in the photobook ‘Sapeurs: Ladies and Gentlemen of the Congo’, by Kehrer Verlag, 2020.
This work documents a fashion culture known as ‘La Sape, Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes’. (Society of Ambiance-Makers & Elegant People). Its followers are known as Sapeurs (men) and Sapeuses (women). Most have ordinary day jobs such as taxi-drivers, tailors and gardeners, but as soon as they clock out they transform themselves into debonair dandies. Sashaying through the streets they are treated like rock stars – turning heads, bringing ‘joie de vivre’ to their communities and defying their circumstances. The photobook is already on its second printing.
Followed by a discussion with Martin Parr and questions from the audience.
