Martin Parr
live from Chew Stoke Church Hall

Martin Parr returns to Chew Stoke for a special evening to launch the latest Parr photobook, A Year in the Life of Chew Stoke Village, published by RRB books, 2022.

This new publication revisits a body of social documentary photography Martin Parr shot in 1992, while he immersed himself in the rural Somerset village of Chew Stoke, situated on the outskirts of Bristol.

Martin will discuss the making of this work and share many of the images from the project.

The images were originally commissioned for the Telegraph Magazine and this latest photobook includes over 40 previously unpublished photographs alongside a new text by Diane Smyth.

Writer Robert Chesshyre, who wrote the original article for the Telegraph Magazine, has written an update on Chew Stoke village and will also join the event.

‘Often described as a ‘chronicler of life’, he is renowned for capturing his unique view of society in a way that enables us to view things that seemed familiar in a completely new way. His work in Chew Stoke is just that; at first glance it may seem to be just quintessential English village life, but Parr’s images bring a sense of ‘human-ness’ to those photographed that makes it easy to form an understanding and connection to the area and the community of Chew Stoke.’ – Dianne Smyth, excerpt from A Year in the Life of Chew Stoke Village

The talk will be held at the Chew Stoke Church Hall and drinks will be available on the evening.
